I was really excited to read this book because I love anything to do with the liturgical year and it's definitely a book to have on hand. While it's not so much about giving you ideas on how to celebrate it's full of important information on the history of the liturgical year, how it works, and the different feast days of the year. One of my favorite parts of this book is going over the differences in definition and importance between Sunday, solemnity, feast, memorial, and weekday. Before this I confused I never quite could distinctly tell the difference between solemnity, feast, and memorial so it was a great to get a clear understanding of the church calendar and how it works.
It goes into detail on the history of the liturgical year and it’s nice to know where we’ve come from and where we’ve gotten certain traditions from. Afterwards it goes into a general overview and the meaning of them on different solemnities and then on feast days. It’s a great in depth look at the celebrations of the liturgical year, something we all should recognize the importance of today! So few people pay attention to anything besides Sunday, Christmas, and easter, but we need all of them to grow in our faith!
For example, with All Saints day coming up review that specifically. It begins with going over the meaning of the solemnity of All Saints. It briefly discuses All Souls’ Day that follows and it’s meaning. It’s a short chapter and discusses more of the history and meaning than perhaps “how to celebrate” but I think before you can celebrate you must know why you are.
Id definitely recommend this book to anyone and especially to those who love to learn about the liturgical year.
